It is easier to take down notes when I use mixed language (lingua franca?) I speak Spanish,English and German,and sometimes I found that a concept described using 8 words in English might be described in only two words or even one.If this kind of mixture is properly used,we can increase the efficiency of note-taking,which would help people work better.
I don't think dialects would take over Mandarin because first,if a dialect is big enough,it might become a language itself (like Cantonese),or it might merge with others if it's not widely-spoken.With the governments' support,Mandarin would be the standard for a long time.

In search of an asian lingua franca
Just now I read an article titled IN SEARCH OF AN ASIAN LINGUA FRANCA, firstly posted on International Herald Tribe on May 28th, 2005, by philip bowring.
The author doubted the future of English as a lingua franca in Asain, as it was being undermined by different languages such as Chinese, Malay and Tamil. In his article, he analysed the reason why there had been a gradual decline of English in Asian and what are the possible successions of English in terms of their advantages and defects.
Although it is not possible for Chinese or any other language to replace English as the Asian lingua franca in a short time, these languages indeed are enlarging their influences. Because of the huge development of China in recent years, China plays a more and more important role in international trading and culture comunicating. As a result, learning Chinese has become a hot issue all over the world. If you do not understand Chinese, you may lose an enormous market as well as uncountable opportunities.
In addition, Chinese people prefer to use Chinese as they think it is the root of their nation, despite of whether they can speak English or not. Although many people think learning a lingua franca is not necessary to learn their culture or be assimilated by their people, many Chinese, especially overseas Chinese, always have a desire to prioritize their country and their language, to strengthen their self-confidence. Many of them never give up the chance to teach their children Chinese, or send their children to Chinese schools, in order to keep their nationality as a patriotic Chinese.
But their is a problem that Chinese lies in a totally different area of English. Chinese is a character language while English is a vocal language. It is easy to learn just 26 letters than thousands of Chinese characters. To fulfill the desire of simple commercial negotiation or everyday communication, people tend to choose to learn English instead of such complicated Chinese. Moreover, English is more common with other languages such as French, German and Italian.
For Asian, English is still a good choice of being lingua franca. Its popularity may be slightly affected but I don't think the propagation of other languages will challenge the position of English.
