Chinese officials say a space mission set to include China's first spacewalk will be launched on Thursday. Three Chinese crew members spoke to reporters today (Wednesday). Astronaut Jing Haipeng said China is ready to impress the world.
The Shenzhou Seven spaceship is expected to orbit the Earth at an altitude of 343 kilometers. One crew member will perform a 40-minute spacewalk to retrieve experimental sample devices and launch a small monitoring satellite. China plans to broadcast the spacewalk on live television.
In 2003, China became the third country to send a manned flight into space, following Russia and the United States. China put a lunar probe into space last year and has announced goals of establishing a space station and landing on the moon by 2012. Russia has shared technology with China to aid its space program.
